03 The roots
Where a buyer’s no comes from
- Felt cost
- The buyer does not feel what staying put is costing them. Your gain is being weighed against a loss they have not admitted.
- Trust
- The buyer does not yet believe that you, or what you offer, will do what you say.
- Priority
- The buyer agrees the change is worth making, just not before the other things already on their list.
- Authority
- The person you are talking to cannot say yes alone, and the people who can have not been part of the conversation.
- Safety
- Saying yes exposes the buyer personally. The organisation might gain; the person deciding might lose.
- Fit
- The offer does not match the buyer’s situation closely enough. Sometimes this is the right answer, and the right move is to walk away.
- Clarity
- The buyer cannot see clearly what they would be agreeing to, so the safest answer is no, or later.
